Caribbean Development Bank President to Keynote ALIDE General Assembly

WILLEMSTAD — Korpodeko and The Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE) have announced that the President of the Caribbean Development Bank, Mr. Dr. Hyginus ‘Gene’ Leon, will be a keynote speaker and a panel member in the discussion on De-risking at their upcoming General Assembly which will take place from the 17th to the 20th of May in Curaçao. This year the central theme of the Assembly is “Innovative technologies and digitalization to boost Latin American and Caribbean development and its finance”. During the Assembly, future opportunities for the region in an emerging technology-based post-COVID 19 economy will be examined, as well as how the development banking system can support economic and production system transformation to enable Latin America and the Caribbean to take a qualitative leap.

Dr. Leon has extensive experience in development financing and the growth of economies in developing countries around the world. He served as an IMF Executive and as an advisor to various governments at the IMF for the past 30 years on different continents, including Asia, The Middle East, Africa, and the Caribbean. Dr. Leon has also served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance for Dominica and was a member of the Board of Governors of both the World Bank and the IMF. As a regional organization, the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) main focus is on supporting the development of its member countries through financing, technical assistance, and policy advice. In recent years, CDB has helped to finance projects in the areas of education, health, infrastructure, and environmental protection.

Prior to working for the IMF, Dr. Leon was an Associate Professor at the State University of New York in Old Westbury in the United States. He previously also worked as Director of Research at the Central Bank of Barbados and as a head economist at the Caribbean Development Bank. Dr. Leon has a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom (UK) and a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Economics from the University of London in the UK.

The ALIDE General Assembly will take place from May 17 till May 20, 2022, in the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort. The General Assembly will bring together development financing institutions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The Assembly will be open to all interested persons and local companies. The entry fee is 500 guilders.

With the organization of the 2022 ALIDE General Assembly, Curaçao is opening its doors to prominent actors that will gather to discuss development financing policy for the region.
